How to Replace and Align an Espresso Machine Shower Screen

Switch off and unplug the espresso machine, let the group head cool fully, and identify whether the shower screen is retained by a screw or by the group gasket. Install the exact model-compatible screen in its documented orientation, inspect or replace the gasket, seat the parts without excessive force, and then check water flow and leaks.

Before you remove the shower screen#

There is no universal procedure for how to replace an espresso shower screen. Screens that look similar can use different retainers, dimensions, seals, and installation sequences.

First, find the user or service manual for the exact machine model and revision. Use its parts diagram or the manufacturer’s parts listing to identify:

• The shower-screen part number
• The group-gasket part number and dimensions
• Any thin shower-plate or dispersion-plate gasket
• The screen attachment method
• The specified screen orientation
• The screw type, tool, and tightening instruction
• Whether owner replacement is permitted

Do not select a screen only because the machine has a “58 mm” portafilter. That number usually describes the basket system, not every dimension of the shower-screen assembly. As one documented example, the IMS E61200IM for E61 groups has a 56.5 mm body, 60 mm border, 17 mm external wall height, and 200-micron filtration specification. Those dimensions do not make it suitable for every nominally 58 mm machine. IMS directs buyers to choose a screen made for the applicable group geometry.

Identify the attachment method#

Inspect the group from below with the machine cold and unplugged. The most common arrangements fall into three categories.

These categories are useful for identification, but they are not permission to use another machine’s procedure. For example, the Profitec Pro 600 manual tells the owner to pry out the shower screen and group gasket together. The Profitec MOVE manual instead specifies removal of a countersunk center screw, shower plate, shower holder, and a separate shower-plate gasket.

“E61” also does not excuse a compatibility check. It identifies a group-head family, but machine makers can specify different gasket materials, gasket heights, screen profiles, and service instructions.

Tools and replacement parts#

Gather only the tools specified for the machine. Depending on the attachment, these can include:

• The correct screwdriver or hex key
• A short, broad flat screwdriver or suitable lever for a gasket-retained screen
• A group-head cleaning brush
• A clean towel
• The exact replacement shower screen
• A new group gasket, if required
• Any separate shower-plate gasket or seal listed for the machine

Avoid sharp picks against a sealing surface. Do not drive a tool into the dispersion plate, gasket groove, or soft metal surrounding the group. Damage in these areas can prevent the new gasket from sealing.

Step 1: Shut down and cool the machine#

1. Finish any required rinse while the machine is still in normal operating condition.
2. Switch the machine off.
3. Disconnect the plug from the electrical outlet.
4. Let the brew group cool fully.
5. Remove the portafilter.
6. Empty the drip tray if moving it is necessary for access.

Profitec’s Pro 600 and DRIVE manuals explicitly give the sequence “switch off,” “disconnect,” and “let cool” before group-gasket and shower-screen replacement. The Breville Barista Touch instructions also require switching off and unplugging before removing its screen and silicone seal.

Do not release a screw or pry at a gasket while the group is hot. Apart from the burn hazard, a hot group makes it more difficult to handle small parts safely.

Step 2: Remove the old screen correctly#

Center-screw screen#

Clean coffee residue out of the screw head before inserting the tool. This reduces the risk of stripping it.

For the Breville Barista Touch, the manufacturer specifies a flat-head screwdriver and counterclockwise rotation. The screw and stainless-steel screen are then retained for cleaning or reassembly. Breville also tells the owner to note which side of the screen faced downward.

Support the screen with one hand as the last threads disengage. Note every washer, spacer, shower plate, or seal and keep the parts in order.

Gasket-retained E61 screen#

On the Profitec Pro 600, the documented procedure is to use a flat screwdriver to pry the shower screen and group gasket out together. Work gradually around the rim rather than forcing one point deeply upward.

The old gasket can be stiff or damaged during removal. Profitec’s maintenance guidance recommends replacing the screen with the portafilter gasket and cleaning the water-distribution plate at the same time. Have a correct replacement gasket ready before starting.

Screen with a holder and separate gasket#

The Profitec MOVE uses a countersunk center screw. Its manual then directs the owner to remove the shower plate and shower holder, followed by the shower-plate gasket and group gasket. This layered construction is a reason not to treat all screw-mounted screens as equivalent.

Stop if the parts under your screen do not match the manual. An unexpected spring, jet, wiring connection, or fastener can indicate that you have the wrong procedure or have reached a technician-only assembly.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the exposed parts#

With the screen removed, inspect the following:

• Shower screen: Look for deformation, torn mesh, separated layers, corrosion, or holes that remain blocked after cleaning.
• Group gasket: Look for cracks, cuts, hardening, permanent flattening, or embedded coffee.
• Dispersion plate or shower holder: Check for loose scale and coffee residue without altering calibrated holes.
• Gasket groove: Remove debris that could hold the gasket crooked.
• Fastener: Check that its drive and threads are undamaged.
• Separate seals: Replace any seal that the manufacturer says must not be reused.

Clean only with methods and chemicals approved in the machine manual. Rinse away loose material and do not leave detergent on a food-contact surface.

A leak between the portafilter and group during extraction can indicate a worn group gasket. However, a loose portafilter, damaged basket rim, excessive basket fill, or contamination on the seal can produce a similar symptom. Inspect the complete sealing interface before assigning the problem to the shower screen.

Step 4: Confirm fit before installation#

Compare the new component with the documented replacement, not only with the worn component.

Check:

1. Manufacturer and product code
2. Intended machine or group family
3. Border and body diameter
4. Overall height or profile
5. Center-hole and screw geometry, if present
6. Gasket height, cross-section, and material
7. Required orientation

A used gasket is not a reliable dimension reference because heat and portafilter use can compress it. Use the machine maker’s specified part number or dimensions. If an aftermarket manufacturer lists compatibility, confirm the exact machine model rather than inferring fit from appearance.

Step 5: Align the gasket and screen#

Orientation varies by design.

For a gasket-retained Profitec Pro 600 group, the manual specifies that the rounded side of the marked group gasket faces upward toward the brew group. The shower screen is locked firmly into the gasket before the combined assembly is inserted. The portafilter without a basket is then used to press the assembly into position.

For the Profitec MOVE, the group gasket’s chamfered side faces upward. The shower-plate gasket, holder, and screen are then reinstalled in the documented order.

For the Breville Barista Touch, the replacement silicone seal goes in flat side first, leaving the ribbed side facing the user. The screen and screw are then reinstalled.

These examples show why “flat side up” or “beveled side down” is unsafe as universal advice. Use the orientation stated for your exact model.

Before seating the parts, check that:

• The gasket is level around its full circumference.
• The screen rim is fully captured where the design requires it.
• No edge is folded or pinched.
• The center hole aligns without pulling the screen sideways.
• The screen sits flat against its holder or dispersion assembly.

Step 6: Tighten or seat without excessive force#

Use manufacturer torque if the manual supplies one. If it does not, do not invent a torque value or copy one from another machine.

Breville’s Barista Touch instructions say to start the screen screw by hand for two or three clockwise turns, then use the screwdriver until the screw is flush with the screen. The manual explicitly says not to overtighten it.

On the Profitec MOVE, the manufacturer directs the user to install the screen assembly with the countersunk screw, then use a basket-free portafilter to slowly press the gasket into position while supporting the brew group from above. For the gasket-retained Pro 600, the portafilter is likewise used to seat the assembled screen and gasket.

A fastener that will not start by hand can be cross-threaded or misaligned. Back it out and correct the alignment. Extra force is not a substitute for correct fit.

Step 7: Check water flow and sealing#

After all tools and loose parts are clear:

1. Reinstall the water tank and drip tray if they were removed.
2. Reconnect power.
3. Start the machine according to its manual.
4. With no portafilter installed, run a brief water-only flush.
5. Watch from a safe distance for water escaping around the screen rim, a displaced screen, or a strong isolated jet.
6. Stop the pump if the screen shifts, the fastener loosens, or water appears above an external joint.
7. Let the machine reach normal brew condition.
8. Fit the empty portafilter and confirm that it locks normally without abnormal force.
9. Perform a water-only brew check and inspect the group-to-portafilter seal.
10. After the group cools again, recheck that the screen and gasket remain level.

An unloaded shower screen does not always produce a perfectly uniform “rain” pattern. Surface tension, group geometry, and residual water can cause streams or droplets. The useful checks are a clear flow path, no severe isolated jet caused by a blockage or bad seating, no movement of the assembly, and no leakage at the intended seals.

If water leaks around the portafilter, stop and inspect the gasket orientation, seating, dimensions, and sealing surfaces. Do not compensate by forcing the portafilter farther than its normal lock position.

When to stop and use a technician#

Arrange qualified service if:

• The machine manual prohibits owner replacement.
• A screw is seized, stripped, or broken.
• The replacement does not match the documented dimensions.
• The dispersion plate is damaged or heavily scaled.
• Water leaks from inside the machine rather than at the portafilter seal.
• The group gasket will not remain seated.
• The screen touches the basket or puck at the machine’s normal dose.
• Water flow remains severely restricted after correct installation.
• Electrical parts or wiring become visible or wet.

A shower-screen replacement is normally a small mechanical task, but the group connects directly to a pressurized hot-water system. Persistent leakage or an unexplained change in flow warrants diagnosis before the machine returns to service.
