Best Low-Dose 58mm Espresso Baskets of 2026
The IMS E&B Lab B702TFH20 is the best low dose espresso basket in this comparison for buyers who prioritize complete, model-specific specifications. IMS documents capacities of 11.5-13.5g for dark roast, 12-14g for medium roast, and 13-15g for light roast. It also publishes the basket's height, body and border diameters, tamper range, hole count, hole diameter, and perforated area.
The VST Precision Filter Basket 15g is the easier recommendation for a conventional 14-16g recipe. The Decent Espresso Slightly Waisted Basket 14g is the distinct choice for people who want a narrower, thicker puck without replacing a 58mm group. La Marzocco's 14g Advanced Precision Basket is a digitally screened alternative for owners who want a basket documented for the La Marzocco portafilter system, although fewer model-specific dimensions are public.
Selection was reviewed on August 19, 2026. We evaluated published documentation and clearly identified owner reports. We did not physically test these baskets, and we do not treat manufacturer flavor or extraction claims as independent findings.

Low-dose basket types compared#
A nominal 58mm basket does not have to hold an 18g or larger dose. Basket depth and lower-wall geometry can reduce the intended capacity while the upper rim remains compatible with a 58mm-class group and portafilter.
The products here fall into two verified design groups:
| Design | Candidates | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional cylindrical or full-width precision basket | IMS B702TFH20, VST 15g, La Marzocco 14g | Smaller capacity comes primarily from basket depth or model-specific extraction geometry. |
| Waisted or step-down basket | Decent Slightly Waisted 14g | The basket narrows below its 58mm upper section, producing a narrower and therefore thicker puck. |
“Tapered” is sometimes used loosely for any basket that narrows. That can cause confusion. IMS calls the B702TFH20 a cylindrical filter with a flat bottom; its separate reference to a “conical cross section” describes the perforations, not a tapered basket wall. Decent explicitly calls its model waisted or step-down and says it narrows from 58mm to 46mm.
Before buying, check the portafilter cavity, retaining spring, basket rim, and shower-screen clearance. A basket can be made for a 58mm group yet still be too deep or mechanically unsuitable for a particular portafilter. Our espresso basket compatibility guide explains those checks. Dose labels are also not a substitute for measuring clearance; use the coin-test and puck-clearance methods in our espresso basket headspace guide.
How we evaluated#
A product had to meet four inclusion rules:
- The maker or an authoritative technical document had to identify it as compatible with a 58mm-class group or portafilter.
- Its documented capacity had to include 16g or less. We treated 17g as outside the central low-dose range for this page.
- We needed enough model-specific evidence to distinguish it from another size in the same range.
- It had to be a currently identifiable product, not an ambiguous reseller listing.
We used an unweighted five-part rubric. Each category received 0, 1, or 2 points, for a possible total of 10:
- Low-dose relevance: 2 for a documented range reaching 14g or less; 1 for a nominal capacity of 15-16g; 0 when the minimum is 17g or more.
- Compatibility evidence: 2 for model-specific dimensions plus group or portafilter guidance; 1 for general 58mm compatibility; 0 when compatibility is unclear.
- Tamper evidence: 2 for a stated diameter or range; 1 for incomplete maker guidance; 0 when none was found.
- Construction and perforation evidence: 2 for detailed material, pattern, hole, or quality-control specifications; 1 for partial construction information; 0 for no meaningful specification.
- Evidence completeness: 2 when primary sources answer nearly all purchase-critical questions; 1 when important facts are missing; 0 when the listing cannot support a responsible recommendation.
Scores were IMS 10/10, VST 9/10, Decent 6/10, and La Marzocco 6/10. These are editorial evidence scores, not laboratory performance ratings. La Marzocco receives full construction and quality-control credit because its current product documentation states that Advanced Precision baskets use proprietary digital scanning, and its 2026 technical history says La Marzocco baskets are screened with an imaging system. Its remaining deductions concern missing model-specific dimensions and tamper guidance, not manufacturing consistency.
A higher score means the buying decision is better documented under this rubric. It does not prove that the coffee will taste better. Products with equal totals can serve different needs, and their order reflects the use cases discussed below.
Exact cross-market prices could not be verified consistently, so our product data uses relative tiers only. We did not assign a budget winner. Availability, tax, and shipping can reverse a small price difference. This direct-affiliate page should be checked again within 90 days.
1. IMS E&B Lab B702TFH20 — best documented low-dose basket#
The IMS B702TFH20 has the strongest model-specific specification sheet in the group. IMS identifies it as a two-cup, 20mm-high, flat-bottom cylindrical basket with a 70mm border and 60mm body. It is ridgeless and accepts a 58mm or 58.4mm tamper. The perforated area is 49mm across, with 715 holes in a hexagonal pattern and a published hole diameter of 0.30mm. IMS also documents electropolishing, recalibrated perforation, and finishing processes.
Its capacity guidance is unusually useful because IMS separates the range by roast: 11.5-13.5g for its dark-roast test coffee, 12-14g for medium, and 13-15g for light. That variation is a warning against treating “12-14g” as a universal physical limit. Bean density, roast development, grind, and desired headspace change how much coffee occupies the basket.
This basket is the best-supported option for buyers targeting about 12-14g while keeping a conventional, full-width puck. However, documentation cannot guarantee an easy dial-in. In one independent owner report, a user described difficulty after moving to this exact model. That anecdote cannot establish a general defect, but it is a useful workflow limitation: a smaller precision basket can require a different grind and puck-preparation routine. Do not copy settings from a deeper 18g basket and expect the same flow.
2. VST Precision Filter Basket 15g — best conventional 14-16g choice#
VST publishes a clear 14-16g range for its 15g Double (EU), along with a 22mm height, 60mm outside diameter, and specified 58.4mm tamper diameter with a +0/-0.05mm tolerance. VST says its precision baskets fit most 58mm portafilters and specifically lists most La Marzocco, Synesso, Nuova Simonelli, Faema, La Cimbali, and Rancilio applications for the 15g size.
That broad statement still requires a machine-level check. VST says some Faema, La Cimbali, and Rancilio installations require a bottomless portafilter. It also advises buyers to compare the basket's 22mm height with the internal depth of their portafilter. This is more useful than relying on “58mm” alone.
VST offers ridged and ridgeless configurations. Its own guidance frames the choice as mechanical: a ridge can hold more securely in the spring, while ridgeless construction makes basket removal easier. VST says each precision basket is individually graded, but the FAQ reviewed for this article does not give a 15g-specific hole count or hole diameter. It also states that filter baskets cannot be returned or exchanged, so confirm both depth and ridge style before ordering.
Choose the VST over the IMS if 14-16g is your normal recipe and you value a tightly specified 58.4mm tamper fit. Choose the IMS if you want to work below 14g or want a more complete public perforation specification.
3. Decent Espresso Slightly Waisted Basket 14g — best waisted option#
Decent Espresso documents a 12-14g dose range and says this model steps down from 58mm to 46mm. The upper portion therefore fits the 58mm-class system while the lower basket creates a narrower coffee bed. Decent says its baskets fit most standard 58mm portafilters.
This geometry addresses the central difficulty of low-dose espresso in a wide group: reducing dose in a full-width basket makes the puck shallower. A waisted basket instead narrows the lower chamber, so the same mass forms a thicker puck. It is a meaningful design choice, not a cosmetic variation.
The tradeoff is evidence completeness. The cited Decent product pages do not publish a required tamper diameter, a hole count, or an exact hole diameter for this model. The 46mm measurement describes the step-down geometry; it does not prove that a 46mm tamper is required. Tamping occurs at the coffee surface, so follow current Decent instructions and verify the tool fit before buying accessories.
Decent makes comparative claims about mouthfeel, complexity, channeling, and consistency across its waisted range. We treat those as the manufacturer's design rationale, not independent proof. Buy this basket because you want the documented 12-14g step-down format, not because it is proven to cost less or because a flavor outcome is guaranteed.
4. La Marzocco Advanced Precision Basket 14g — best for a documented La Marzocco setup#
La Marzocco identifies F.3.028.01 as a 14g stainless-steel filter basket. Current official Advanced Precision product pages describe the range as using proprietary digital scanning and quality control. La Marzocco's February 2026 account of its precision-basket development also says its baskets are screened with an imaging system to ensure consistency and quality.
That current evidence supersedes the earlier claim that Advanced Precision baskets are not individually scanned. We therefore credit the 14g model for documented digital screening and quality control. La Marzocco also says its 14g, 15g, and 21g baskets use the same underlying extraction geometry, with hole sizing adjusted for each capacity.
The remaining evidence limitation is retail fit detail. The reviewed primary sources do not state a permissible dose range around 14g, a required tamper diameter, complete model-specific dimensions, or a full perforation specification for F.3.028.01. The current Advanced Precision product documentation says the baskets fit La Marzocco portafilters, but a general 58mm buyer should still verify the exact part and fit.
This is a defensible choice for an owner who wants a digitally screened 14g basket documented for the La Marzocco system. It ranks below IMS and VST for a general buyer because those manufacturers publish more model-specific dimensions and tool-fit data, not because La Marzocco lacks documented manufacturing quality control.
Why the Pullman 876 17-19g was not ranked#
We considered the Pullman Filtration876 Basket 17-19g and excluded it from the ranked products because its minimum documented dose is 17g. That is smaller than many 18-22g baskets, but it does not meet this article's inclusion rule of supporting 16g or less.
The exclusion is not a quality judgment. Pullman publishes strong construction data: 876 precision-cut holes, AISI 304 stainless steel, suitability for 58-58.4mm tampers, and a 58.55mm BigStep recommendation for maximum surface coverage. Its brochure specifies 0.30 ± 0.02mm holes and a guaranteed 58.70mm internal diameter. It is a relevant small-double basket, but it is not the right answer for a reader seeking approximately 12-15g.
Pullman's BigStep guidance also illustrates a workflow constraint that applies across precision baskets: a very close-fitting tamper leaves little room for an angled tamp. Pullman says the 58.55mm base requires a properly vertical action. More surface coverage can therefore demand more careful tool alignment.
How to choose between conventional, tapered, and waisted baskets#
For a familiar double-basket workflow at 14-16g, start with a conventional basket such as the VST 15g. Its dose and tamper specifications are direct, and its 22mm depth is easy to compare with a portafilter cavity.
For approximately 12-14g, the IMS B702TFH20 offers a conventional cylindrical body with a shallow 20mm height. It retains a wide, flat-bottom puck and supplies the best model-specific technical documentation in this group.
Choose the Decent model when you intentionally want waisted geometry. Its narrow lower chamber changes puck shape more substantially than simply choosing a shallower basket. That can require a fresh grind setting and distribution routine.
Choose the La Marzocco 14g when you want the manufacturer's digitally screened basket for a matched La Marzocco portafilter system. Confirm the part number because a nominal 14g label alone does not supply the missing tamper and dimensional specifications.
Do not use the terms “tapered” and “waisted” as exact synonyms when comparing listings. A conventional basket can have subtly changing walls, while a true step-down basket has a pronounced narrower chamber. Also distinguish basket geometry from hole geometry: IMS's “conical cross section” specification applies to its holes.
Finally, select dose through headspace rather than the printed gram label alone. The IMS roast-specific ranges show why: different coffees occupy different volumes at the same mass. Lock in the dry, prepared puck; verify that it does not press into the shower screen; then adjust within the manufacturer's range.
Verdict#
The IMS E&B Lab B702TFH20 is our first choice because it combines genuine low-dose capacity with the most complete model-specific evidence. It covers roughly 11.5-15g depending on roast, uses a conventional 20mm cylindrical body, accepts common precision tamper sizes, and documents its full perforation pattern.
The VST 15g is the better fit for a straightforward 14-16g workflow and buyers who specifically want a documented 58.4mm tamper specification. The Decent Slightly Waisted 14g is the specialized choice for a thicker, narrower 12-14g puck. The La Marzocco 14g Advanced Precision is a digitally screened choice for matched La Marzocco systems, but its public documentation leaves more dimensional and tamper-fit questions unanswered than IMS or VST.
No product receives a budget recommendation because comparable current prices were not verified across the relevant markets.

Q & A
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best low-dose espresso basket for a 58mm group?
- The IMS E&B Lab B702TFH20 is our evidence-led first choice because IMS publishes its dimensions, roast-specific capacities, tamper range, hole count, hole diameter, and perforated area. The VST 15g is a strong alternative for a simpler 14-16g conventional workflow.
- Can I use a 14g dose in a 58mm espresso machine?
- Yes, if the basket is designed for that dose and fits the portafilter. The IMS B702TFH20, VST 15g, Decent Slightly Waisted 14g, and La Marzocco Advanced Precision 14g all have manufacturer documentation that places 14g within or at their stated nominal capacity.
- Does a low-dose 58mm basket need a smaller tamper?
- Not always. IMS specifies 58-58.4mm tampers for the B702TFH20, and VST specifies 58.4mm for its 15g basket. A waisted basket can narrow below the tamping area, but buyers must follow the maker's exact specification rather than infer tamper size from the lower basket width.
